This place hardly merits a mention on a map but has been a lifesaver.
We started the day in Jasper about 8am and caught Patricia and Pyramid lakes in stillness and relative solitude. GyPSy then took us to the Jasper Tramway - gondola to the rest of us - but the peak was in cloud so we turned left at Highway 95 and headed for Kamloops, about 450k away.
The drive took a while because it is so beautiful - classic Canadian Rockies postcards. We even saw a bear close up while checking on an apology to Japanese internees - for next time I teach Snow Falling on Cedars. Tess used telephoto for the plaque.
Mount Robson was the major peak along the way but this was a drive with forests, peaks and lakes.
Tess took hundreds more photos and now has the time to import them because just 1.5 hours from Kamloops we came to a stop and learned from a truckie that the highway was closed for 12-24 hours due to a toxic spill just up the road. If its 24 hours, we miss our flight to Seattle and possibly the cruise.
This news deflated us somewhat. Tess was all for driving back up to Prince George - 450k north - and then 800k to Vancouver. The driver found that prospect less than appealing. Look on the map and we would be driving 12+ hours - some in the dark and after a whole day in the car already - to get back to the same place we are now but slightly west of the spill. We checked out various rest spots along the way back up the road - taking us further from Kamloops and Vancouver as we went - until filling the car here, getting no joy from the dumb gas attendant - or luck with the neighboring hotel - no rooms even further back up towards Jasper - we resigned ourselves to the pub. Tammy was a breath of fresh air. The bar sign said No Sniveling, so we ordered a drink and then unloaded our predicament. We called Jetset Glenbrook and await a return call. Barring changes, the plan is to sleep a few hours in the cabin ($30 pp) and head back down the road around 4am in the hope that the 12 hour forecast is correct. If not, we're screwed.
We console ourselves that we are okay. I would not have been up to the drive.
And the road to Prince George is closed anyway - wash away.
Welcome to Canada:)
