Wonderful Whitby

Warwick told me it was a pretty spot and he is right. And on a Bank Holiday weekend, very popular. I have decided that I prefer the English seaside to the brash aussi surf culture. The mournful song of the gulls against the cliffs and the buzz of people in the streets beats many of our surf spots. Whitby seems like Coogee but on a grand scale.
We started early, collecting Em from her college room just after 9 am and headed up the M1 at typical speed until north of York we exited and journeyed through lovely towns like Thirsk, Pickering (missed the model train show) and ???? wait for map.
Whitby was not what I expected. We parked atop the hill on the East side of the river ????? and looked over the ruined Cathedral before setting off on Caedmons Trod to the town. Its bustling bank holiday cobblestones reminded me of the Shambles. Every one was in good cheer and we took lots of people and place shots. The North Sea was a mill pond.
Our return trip took us via Robin Hood's Cove - even busier - and back through Ripon so I could show Emma the Fountains Abbey under dry conditions.
