Observations on Driving in England

Sitting in Leeds cafe while Tess has haircut. Will be a slow coffee - uploading some of the 1500 photos she has taken so far to her Facebook albums! Hope to venture out in the afternoon with Emma to see more of the Yorkshire Dales.
Driving these roads has taught me some things about English drivers.
  1. They are more considerate because even in towns they have to yield to oncoming traffic due to parked cars.
  2. They drive too fast on wet and windy roads.
  3. Petrol is £1 per litre but that does not encourage fuel conservation - they really speed on their motorways. Audis rocketed by in the fast lane with me on 120kmh.
  4. They toot less than Australians and much less than Americans.
  5. Their truck drivers really know how wide their rigs are.
  6. They must be fantastic navigators because of the myriad roads available for any destination.
  7. Too many changes in speed signs. They will be unrestricted on suburbia for one mile and then back to 40mph.
  8. Scary having curbs on 50 mph/80kph roads. Okay in minis but the poms have discovered 4wds!
  9. We think we have too many speed cameras!
  10. They drive lorries here, not trucks. Sounds so old fashioned.
Despite a generally positive experience, the tension of having an accident or getting lost en route to a city hotel are powerful arguments fot letting someone else do the driving. A coach or train tour might be the go in future or certainly a shorter hire.
The Benz has been nice to drive. Only a 180 Kompressor but when floored it gets along quite nicely. Tess has got it up to 136kmh so far and is keenn to take it further on the M1 eventually.
Will add a photo this afternoon.

Interesting that you've had it with the driving tension. perhaps a mixed period would fix that, a week driving then a tour or a week on public transport, and then another week driving. The freedom of going where you want and as fast or slow as you want surely is very important. We should discuss this further when you return, but we are likely to have only a week touring so the stress buildup will be less for us.

Thanks Russ and for being my only Follower! Another long but rewarding day behind the wheel today - our 3000th mile. See entry.Have also had to update this entry after a few more driving habits came to mind. A mix of transport modes is the ideal.

Russ is not your only follower, I'm just a lagging a little.

I guess I'll have to give up on my idea of having you and Tess as our driver/navigator pair.
